Canada Calls Early Election to Take on Trump

Previously, she congratulated Carney on his victory in the Canadian elections and promised to work to “strengthen ties” amid trade tensions caused by the tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Over the weekend, Sheinbaum received Canada’s new ambassador to Mexico, Cameron MacKay, who presented his credentials to the Mexican leader during a meeting in which they discussed the future prospects of bilateral relations between their countries.

Mark Carney begins his term in the midst of Trump’s trade war, which threatens to nullify the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), in force since 2020.

On Sunday, the Canadian Prime Minister requested that Mary Simon, who serves as head of state, dissolve Parliament and call for early elections on April 28.

Carney, who became Prime Minister on March 14 following the resignation of Justin Trudeau, decided to call early elections at a time when the latest polls indicate that the ruling Liberal Party (LP) could win for the fourth consecutive time since 2015 and secure a majority in the House of Commons.

The Canadian PM takes office after tensions between Trudeau and Sheinbaum over trade disputes triggered by Trump’s arrival at the White House. The U.S. President has threatened both countries with imposing across-the-board 25% tariffs starting on April 2.

The new head of the Canadian government comes into office with a solid reputation from his tenure at the Bank of Canada (2008–2013) and the Bank of England (2013–2020).
